How do the Craigslist scams work?

I’m looking on Craigslist for a phone, and 90% of the postings say to contact so and so at some long drawn out email address. Wtf? What actually happens if you email the random email listed? Who is dumb enough to actually see that and think its real?

Are you talking about the craigslist anonymized email addresses, or some other address within the post itself?

I think standard protocol is for the scammer to agree to terms as either a buyer or seller, and ask you to meet at what sounds like a populated area. Then you, as the scammee, show up and are violently murdered. Perhaps slowly.

I bought my phone on eBay. It had a picture of the esn and imei in the auction so I was able to check with my cell phone carrier and make sure it was clean. $96 shipped for a Galaxy Note 2.
